Durham, North Carolina —Vulcan Elements is proud to announce that it has been selected as a winner of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation for Maritime Readiness Challenge—administered by Advanced Technology International, with support from the Department of Defense’s Defense Industrial Base Consortium (DIBC). Over 400 manufacturing companies competed, and Vulcan Elements is excited that its innovative magnet manufacturing process was selected. As the U.S. Navy and DoD’s Maritime Industrial Base Program prepare to invest over $29 billion in the maritime industrial base following passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, this achievement positions Vulcan as the solution for America’s maritime supply chains.
The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation for Maritime Readiness Challenge is a critical step in executing President Trump’s April 2025 Executive Order to Revitalize U.S. Maritime Power. The challenge specifically sought to identify innovative, dual‑use technologies that strengthen American maritime readiness and resilience. Vulcan’s secure, traceable, and domestic rare earth magnet manufacturing capability was chosen from a competitive national pool and will be featured at the Maritime Innovation Forum in Washington, DC, in August. An expert review panel chose Vulcan based on five criteria: impact on maritime readiness, technological readiness, scalability, financial viability, and overall quality of the proposal.
Vulcan’s selection reaffirms the strategic importance of domestic rare earth magnet production for U.S. defense and industrial base resilience—especially as magnets underpin the performance of critical naval systems, from submarines and destroyers to uncrewed undersea systems.
“Magnets are essential to the future of our economy and our national security,” said Vulcan Elements CEO John Maslin. “We’re grateful to ATI and the Department of Defense for supporting Vulcan as it accelerates and onshores this foundational capability.”
Through focused innovation and execution, Vulcan is setting a new standard for rare earth magnet manufacturing. As the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense look to modernize and secure their supply chains, Vulcan stands ready to deliver.
Vulcan Elements manufactures permanent sintered neodymium iron boron magnets in the United States for critical defense and commercial applications. The company remains committed to advancing technological innovations, galvanizing America’s manufacturing workforce, and collaborating with both public and private sector stakeholders to strengthen the domestic rare earth magnet supply chain.
